Late Winter Blues

February 28, 2008

Man, the trails are just a wreck right now! Mother nature is forcing me to ride my road bike. The fact that I’m writing this and not already on my bike is a testament to that. Road riding isn’t all bad, in fact I kind of like it. Unfortunately I’m no longer very good at it. As years go by I dust off my road bike less and less. Now I’m at the point where I only ride it on the Spring Classic.

Even though I’ve done countless five plus hour rides this winter I’m not really in shape. For me being out of shape is easy to hide on the mountain bike. But on the road bike I just get smoked and can no longer hold a wheel. Maybe if I go ride my road bike a bit I’ll be more proficient at it. Well, here I go…wish me luck!

Spring Classic #1

February 26, 2008

Well, Monday has come and passed but here’s your ride report:

As always the first installment of the Spring Classic was tough as hell. There’s just no other way to do 55 miles on a road bike that’s more physically challenging. And as stated before there was snow and ice on many sections of the course. The mud however on Kelly Drive proved to be the biggest obstacle for me. It just sucked the life right out of me.

I believe Harlan Price was the man of the day, though Joseph Rey put on a near equal show of strength. Montana slashed his way onto the podium, his ability to attack is unparalleled especially on a steep climb. Big Al put in a strong ride as did Doc George, both men in the signature pink of bicyclebaby.com.

The best new rider was certainly Warren from Mt. Airy. What an a$$ kicking dude! He’s strong as an ox but a full on roadie who gladly subjected himself to quite un-roadie like conditions. There’s no doubt Warren had more fun than anybody on the ride. The Spring Classic is such a blast every time. My butt and legs still hurt from it and probably will until next Sunday when we do it all again.
