CTR Plans

February 18, 2008

While many of you already know about my summer plans, I thought that I would give an update for those who don't. In addition to the regular MTB schedule, I'm planning on making my way up to the Rockies with Mr. Pete for the Colorado Trail Race (CTR). Modeled off the GDR, this 530 mile race from Denver to Durango on some of the state's finest singletrack is a fully self-supported race. There is no entry fee, no support, no registration, and no prize money. In the spirit of preserving a true backcountry experience, we will be racing for bragging rights only.
As you can imagine, preparing for a 5+ day solo excursion is a daunting task, which is why much of my time lately has been spent reading about the latest and greatest in ultralight "bikepacking" equipment--bivy sacks, DIY lights, water purifiers, bike bags, etc.
While I would much rather be out on my bike than surfing the web, recent knee pain has been keeping me out of commission lately. My body may not be in top shape, but I have made some exciting progress on the equipment front--spent a night under the stars in my new Montbell UL bivy, will be placing an order for some LEDs to mess around with, oh...and the guy who built my bike just won Best Off-Road Bike at NAHBS 2008. Congrats Drew!
I will update as new gear arrives, plans materialize, and injuries subside. This week will be a lot of R & R in hope that the cranks will be turning in time for the Classic.
The bivy packs to the size of a pint glass!
